McDonald's Corp., the world’s biggest hamburger chain, has filed trademarks for ground and whole bean coffee, meaning that it may start selling its brew in stores or in supermarkets. Last month the company filed the trademarks for "McCafe" ground and whole bean coffee.
Ms. Danya Proud, a spokeswoman for McDonald's, said that it was nothing unusual."As part of doing business, we register a number of trademarks to protect our brand equities", "This is nothing new." she mentioned.
In 2009 McDonald’s introduced its premium coffee drinks and introduced fruit smoothies the year after that. This expansion of the company’s beverage business has been a big part of McDonald’s success in recent years. However, moving into the bagged coffee business is new ground.
The filing of McDonald's trademarks was reported previously by a website called Burger Business and The Wall Street Journal. The company’s shares rose with 63 cents to $90.98 in afternoon trading on the day that the trademarks were filed.
