Trademark Registration in India

Overview of Trademark Protection in India

The Trademark Department of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), manages trademark registrations in India, granting exclusive rights nationwide with a single application. As a member of the Madrid System, India enables businesses to designate their trademarks in an International Registration (IR) through the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), providing an efficient route for global trademark protection across multiple countries.

With India’s growing consumer base and evolving intellectual property landscape, a registered trademark provides the legal backing to defend your brand across the country and benefit from strong enforcement mechanisms. Securing your trademark also positions your business for future growth and international expansion, particularly within the South Asian region.
